Eudora Welty is perhaps the greatest unread writer in American history. This biography's title promises dramatic revelations and heart-stopping anecdotes. What it does give the reader is a clean craftman's tale of the facts of this writer's life. It leaves the reader to draw from them what he will. Reading of her early life and pre-World War Two existence I for one was truly impressed in how well- traveled she was and how strong-willed. Won't go into details won't matter. No shrinking violet like the sad recluse Emily in New England, this Southern Belle lead the life she wanted with the cards she was dealt.For a northern boy use to endless speculation about the "real meaning" of an artist's work or obtrusive psychological analysis or even worse typical Yankee contempt for anything Southern that does not drip with self-disgust, I found this biography a rewarding experience and if does not help one to appreciate Welty's work, it will certainly help one to appreciate her life and her world.As a PS, the pictures and photographs were a pleasure to behold.
I'm so glad I found this book and began a wonderful journey learning about an author about whom I knew very little. This strong, loyal, brilliant woman lived an amazing life not in line with the women of her time; she fit no one's "mold!' I can't fathom how a woman of her calibre was able to drive through all the barriers existing at that time and make her mark in countless ways and venues. A pretty tough life at times but she lived it well!
Really enjoyed this short biography of one of my favorite authors.
Carolyn Brown's gathering of evidence to offer close attention to Welty's life during the protracted civil rights struggles in her state is an invaluable companion to the reading of writing. Since Welty was not one to preach her views in her fiction, it is possible to read her well-crafted stories wthout realizing the extent to which she herself was a sympathetic witness and then a participant in that struggle. Not however, after finishing the eye opening biography of Brown.
Well written and interesting. I knew nothing about Ms. Welty before ready this work. I feel like I learned a lot from it.

This slim biography is a concise but worthy introduction to Eudora Welty's life, which covered most of the last century. It provides insight into how personal circumstances and national events affected Welty's writing for readers who aren't yet prepared to tackle a larger book about her. A Daring Life quotes extensively from the much longer (almost 700 page) biography by Suzanne Marrs, a women author Carolyn J. Brown thanks as a mentor in the acknowledgements, and from Eudora Welty's own book about her life, One Writer's Beginning.Eudora Welty grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and began her writing life as a listener, because even as a child she was always interested in the stories being told around her. Welty's personal story includes some of the pivotal events of the 1900's. She lived through the Great Depression, she had many friends, family members, and an early love interest who fought in World War II, and she supported the Civil Rights movement even in its early days by refusing to speak to segregated audiences. Though having to be a caregiver for several of her family members put Welty's writing on hold for years, she won a Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Optimist's Daughter in 1973. A Daring Life piqued my interest enough to make me seek out some of the stories, novels and essays by Welty that I hadn't yet read.
Year ago I read The Optimist's Daughter and was enchanted by the book. However, I really knew nothing about the author. A Daring Life, with its lively prose and great pictures(all with full descriptions). have made me curious to read more. This is the best that a biography of an author can do.
